From Blackberry Hill Farm’s Website:
Blackberry Hill Farm is a modest family farm in Columbia County, Upstate New York. We have been growing herbs organically for almost 20 years. We diversified by adding llamas, sheep and angora rabbits to our operation and we now produce luxury fibers for handspinners and knitters. To meet the challenges of marketing our products we became vendors at farmers markets, fairs and festivals from New York City to the Capital District in New York State. We hosted workshops and classes where we taught participants how to raise farm animals, to garden, and to use herbs for cooking and health.
We have always been committed to honoring the environment and we continue to farm without the use of harmful chemicals. We believe that just as there are alternative farming methods, there are alternative health choices including medicinal herbs. We began growing medicinal herbs several years ago and now offer these for sale.
Our goal is always to offer our best products to our customers. All of our products are produced using the beautiful fleeces that our llamas, alpacas, sheep, and angora rabbits grow. Our flock of sheep includes our Cormos, Cormo crosses, and “a hand spinner’s flock” that mixes Merino, Romney, Cormo, Rambouillet, and a few other breeds.
We are hands on farmers. We feed our animals twice a day, everyday, and can tell you all of their names and even some of their birthdays. We birth them, feed them, clean up after them, shear them, and use their fleeces in a variety of ways. Much of our roving and yarn is mill processed (locally in the Hudson Valley where noted), but we will offer handspun yarns at times and all our fiber art is handmade by us with our fiber (unless otherwise specified).
Come escape to our farm for a day. Treat yourself to a day with llamas, alpacas, sheep and rabbits. Learn the ins and outs of producing great fibers and yarns. Spend time in the comfort of the garden or the wood stove (seasonal). We’ll serve you a great mid-day meal plus a late day snack.
Some of your options include participating in lambing, shearing, grooming, feeding and learning what it’s like to operate our business. There are chickens (eggs to collect) maple syrup to be made (Feb & March), gardens to tend, greenhouse to grow, washing fleece, carding fleece, always something rewarding and soul-nourishing. Or if you choose, spend the whole day in the atmosphere and ambience of our farm knitting, crocheting, felting or spinning. We will be here to accommodate your choice of activities.
